Website Builders: Compare Real Cost, Ownership and Portability

A website builder packages the editing experience and the service that runs your site. The useful comparison is whether that package fits your business today, what it will cost to keep, and what happens if you leave.

Start with our Wix vs. Squarespace comparison for billing commitments and documented export boundaries. Read website builder export vs. backup to understand the difference between saving content and moving a working website.

For plan prices and full subscription payments, read our Wix pricing and renewal guide. It separates annual monthly equivalents from monthly-billing reference rates, and explains domain and email costs.

For plan rates, selling fees and renewal checks, read our Squarespace pricing guide. Photographers deciding between a general builder and private proofing galleries can also read our photography website hosting comparison.

Choose around the job your website must do

Local businesses and service websites

Write a short acceptance checklist: explain the service, collect an enquiry, route it to the right person, and support bookings if required. Test that workflow before committing to a long term. An attractive template is the beginning of the evaluation.

Online stores and paid content

Budget for the selected tier, platform transaction charges, payment processing, and any tools the workflow requires. Check how you can preserve products, orders, customers, and subscriptions. A CSV download and a working replacement checkout are different deliverables.

Agencies and businesses working with a developer

Agree who owns the accounts, controls billing, and can hand over the site. Use the business website handover checklist before signing off a build.

Illustrated guide: Website Builders: Compare Real Cost, Ownership and Portability

How HRL evaluates the real cost

We separate the upfront invoice from its advertised monthly equivalent, and the first term from renewal. Domain, email, apps, selling fees, and migration work belong in their own budget lines. Prices need a source, check date, country, currency, and term; unknown costs remain unknown.

For a three- or five-year comparison, include every required payment in that horizon. If a renewal prepays service beyond the horizon, show cash paid separately from cost allocated to the years you intend to use. Do not rank a prepaid plan as cheaper solely because its monthly equivalent is lower.

Ownership and portability are purchase decisions

Ask what can be saved, what can be imported elsewhere, what must be rebuilt, and which services must keep running during a move. Keep domain registration, DNS, website hosting, and email as separate decisions. Our domain transfer vs. DNS change guide helps explain that distinction.

If choosing your host independently is central to the project, compare the builder approach with shared and managed WordPress hosting. Include the time or support needed to operate the replacement, alongside its subscription cost.

Webflow pricing and platform choice

Read Webflow pricing: Site plans, Workspace costs and renewal changes, then compare Webflow with self-hosted WordPress by publishing workflow, operating responsibility and portability.

Hostinger builder cost and application choice

Read Hostinger Website Builder pricing for upfront payments, renewal and separate store costs. Compare Hostinger Website Builder and WordPress by editing, maintenance and export boundaries.

For a hosted-builder shortlist, compare Webflow vs. Wix and Webflow vs. Squarespace by publishing workflow, business functions and leaving costs.

Start with one decision, then follow its dependencies

For a service website, start with Wix versus Squarespace, then check the selected plan’s renewal and mailbox bill. For a store, begin with Shopify versus WooCommerce, then follow pricing, launch and recovery. For a developer-built content site, compare Webflow and WordPress and agree who maintains it. These are reading paths, not platform rankings.
