Website Builder Export vs. Backup: Can You Move to Another Host?

Website Builder Export vs. Backup: Can You Move to Another Host?

“Export your website” can mean a content file, a collection of page assets, or a code project that still depends on services elsewhere. Before buying replacement hosting, identify what you can take with you and what will need to be rebuilt.

Our recommendation: make an export inventory, test it on a temporary destination, and confirm the customer-facing functions before changing DNS or canceling the old service. This guide compares documented export boundaries; it does not claim hands-on migration tests or rank website builders.

A content export, code export, and backup preserve different things

Ask what the output contains and which tool can use it. A content export may help populate a new site without reproducing its layout or functions. A code export may give you files to deploy without the hosted databases or services that made the original site work. A backup is only useful for your intended recovery when you have a supported way to restore it.

Do not use the existence of a download button as the acceptance test. Try the documented import or deployment procedure on a separate destination and record the missing pieces. Keep screenshots as a design reference, alongside the actual content and files; an image of a page is not an editable installation.

What can you move from Hostinger, Wix, and Webflow?

Documented export scope, checked October 1, 2026
Product or export methodDocumented boundaryPlanning implication
Hostinger AI Builder, manual modeIts WordPress content export includes regular pages, text, images and files, but excludes layout, store functions, forms, integrations and SEO settings.Budget for design and functional reconstruction, then verify the transferred content.
Hostinger AI Builder, agentic modeCode export produces a React/Vite project. Integrated backend data is separate, and edited exports cannot be imported back for continued prompting.Identify the destination runtime, data migration and future editing process.
WixWix documents its site as dependent on Wix hosting; connecting a domain from another provider does not move the site.Plan a replacement site rather than assuming a host-to-host file transfer.
Webflow code exportA paid Workspace plan enables HTML, CSS, JavaScript and asset export. Hosted CMS, ecommerce, form processing and password protection are excluded.Inventory the hosted features and implement their replacements before launch.

Read the documentation for the exact product and export method in your account: Hostinger manual-mode content export, Hostinger agentic-mode code export, Wix hosting boundary, and Webflow code export. Different plans and methods can have different scope.

For Webflow, the Workspace entitlement is separate from a Site plan. Its documentation also distinguishes separately exported collection data from a working CMS in the code output. Treat data preservation and application replacement as separate tasks.

For the cost of those entitlements, read our Webflow Site and Workspace pricing guide. For destination responsibilities, compare Webflow and self-hosted WordPress. These supporting guides were checked October 5, 2026.

Squarespace exports selected content, not the whole site

Squarespace’s XML export supports selected content, including one blog, but excludes style settings, custom CSS, and store pages. Image references may still rely on the old site. Verify destination media before cancellation. Separate product and order CSV exports preserve records rather than a working store.

Documentation checked October 5, 2026. Our Wix vs. Squarespace comparison connects these boundaries to the purchase decision. Explore the website-builder research hub for cost and ownership questions.

Include the cost of keeping both subscriptions active while testing the replacement. Our Wix pricing guide and Squarespace pricing guide explain billing and renewal checks to add to the move budget.

Shopify records and themes need a destination workflow

For repairing an existing store, use our Shopify backup and recovery checklist to separate exported records from a proven restore process.

Shopify documents CSV exports for store records and a theme download. Its store-duplication workflow still requires app reinstallation and manual configuration; the standard admin does not import orders. A paid Theme Store theme is licensed to its original store. These are Shopify-specific duplication limits, not a specification for every destination platform. See Shopify backups and duplication, checked October 5, 2026.

Ask the destination developer how preserved records become a working replacement store. Our Shopify pricing and leaving-cost guide connects that work to the subscription and payment-fee budget. For a WordPress store destination, use the Shopify-to-WooCommerce migration checklist to define data mapping, checkout tests and cutover acceptance.

Create an inventory before you leave the builder

Use a row for each important asset or function. Record its current location, the available export, the person responsible for rebuilding it, and the test that will prove it works at the destination.

  • Content: pages, posts, images, downloadable files and navigation.
  • Business records: products, orders, appointment records, customers and form submissions where applicable.
  • Functions: forms, search, accounts, payments, booking calendars and automation.
  • Search settings: existing URLs, page titles, descriptions, canonical choices and redirects.
  • Accounts: domain registration, DNS, mailboxes, analytics, external services and billing ownership.

For each row, distinguish “saved a copy” from “works in the replacement.” An exported product list, for example, needs a destination that can use its fields and a tested purchase flow. Keep important business records in an appropriately controlled location while working through the move.

Choose hosting around the replacement you will actually run

Define the destination architecture before choosing a discounted plan. Are you rebuilding in WordPress, deploying exported pages, or maintaining an application with separate data and services? Ask the host to confirm the exact software, deployment procedure and support boundary for that arrangement.

Hostinger’s agentic export documentation describes a build step for producing static files from its project. The exported project is therefore not interchangeable with a ready-to-upload WordPress backup. Ask the person handling deployment to identify where forms, authentication and stored data will run, rather than inferring those capabilities from the frontend files.

For the purchase decision, compare Hostinger Website Builder and WordPress, then check builder upfront bills, renewals and separate store costs. Those supporting guides were checked October 5, 2026.

Use our WordPress hosting shortlist when WordPress is the chosen destination. If a custom application is proposed, use shared, VPS and cloud hosting explained to compare operating responsibilities, then validate the requirements with the host. No shortlist is proof that a particular export will deploy successfully.

Test the rebuilt functions as well as the design

Agree an acceptance checklist before the move. A replacement that looks familiar can still fail to collect enquiries, protect a private page, or record a transaction. Test the functions from a visitor’s perspective using controlled accounts, recipients and payment test settings where available.

  1. Open important pages and downloads on desktop and mobile.
  2. Submit each form and confirm the record and notification reach the intended destination.
  3. Check account access, protected content and password reset if the site uses them.
  4. Complete the documented payment, cancellation and refund test flow where applicable.
  5. Test appointments, availability and reminders if booking is part of the site.
  6. Verify analytics configuration and the important conversion actions.
  7. Rehearse a backup and recovery at the new destination.

Webflow explicitly notes that password protection is not retained by code export. Give access controls their own acceptance check before placing private material on the replacement. For appointment sites, our booking website hosting guide provides a more detailed workflow checklist.

Keep URLs, domain ownership, and email in the move plan

Make a mapping from important old URLs to the intended destination URLs. Preserve addresses where practical; document and test the redirect behavior for changed addresses. Review page metadata and internal links as part of the rebuild rather than assuming a content transfer preserved them.

Domain registration, DNS, website hosting and mailboxes need separate decisions. You may be changing the site destination without changing the registrar. Our domain transfer vs. DNS change guide helps identify the required action, and the email migration checklist covers the mail-related checks.

Cancel after acceptance, with the right scope

Keep the old service available while the replacement is tested and the cutover is checked. Confirm how current orders, enquiries or bookings will be handled during the transition. Record a rollback owner and the conditions that would trigger rollback.

Review each subscription separately before canceling anything: site plan, domain, email, apps and external services may have different owners and renewal dates. Ask what remains accessible afterward and save the records you need first. Our website migration guide covers the wider move, while free migration scope helps distinguish a transfer service from rebuilding a builder website.

Common builder-portability questions

Can I move a website builder site to cheaper hosting?

First verify the export method and destination requirements. The cost comparison needs to include rebuilding functions, maintenance and any replacement services as well as hosting. A lower hosting bill alone does not establish a lower total cost.

Does a free migration offer include rebuilding my builder site?

Ask the destination provider to list the supported source platform and deliverables. Request explicit confirmation about layout, forms, business records and integrations before treating reconstruction as included.

Is exporting content the same as exporting the design?

No. Check both items independently in the documented scope and test the result. The content transfer can be useful even when the design needs rebuilding.

Do I have to transfer my domain?

Identify whether you are changing registration ownership, nameservers or website records. Decide from the intended setup rather than bundling a registrar transfer into every website move.

What should I ask before choosing a new builder?

Ask for the current export formats, missing functions, export entitlement, data access, cancellation effects and supported destination workflow. Request a sample or documented rehearsal where available and assign responsibility for future maintenance.
