Webflow vs. Wix: Content Models, Business Workflows and Export Limits

Documentation checked October 5, 2026. Documented platform boundaries are sourced. Selection criteria and example project briefs are HRL analysis, not hands-on tests.

For a service business choosing between Webflow and Wix, separate the website’s content job from its operating job. A site can look excellent and still route enquiries badly, require an unexpected booking subscription or leave the owner unable to make routine changes.

HRL would first investigate Wix when the brief centres on a business site with service and selling workflows. We would first investigate Webflow when the brief centres on a deliberately structured content model and a design team capable of maintaining it. Neither starting point settles compatibility, cost or ownership.

Illustrated guide: Webflow vs. Wix: Content Models, Business Workflows and Export Limits

Two briefs that lead to different tests

Consider a local service business with five service pages, one booking flow and an owner who changes availability. Its critical demonstration is an appointment request through confirmation, followed by an owner changing the schedule. The editor demonstration belongs to the person who will actually operate the site.

Now consider a publishing project with locations, specialists and case studies linked together. Its critical demonstration is adding a new location once, associating it with the right records and publishing the intended pages. HRL recommends testing that representative content structure before committing to a builder or redesign.

Match the plan to the complete job

The Wix plan selector lists accepting payments, basic ecommerce, and scheduling and services on Core. That establishes a place to investigate, not proof that every appointment, product or staff configuration is covered.

Webflow’s plan guide separates Site publishing entitlements from Workspace building and collaboration. Code export needs a paid Workspace. Record the combination needed for the actual job rather than assuming one plan covers every role.

Use the Wix pricing guide and Webflow pricing guide for dated references. Keep annual upfront amounts separate from monthly equivalents. Add required apps, seats, domain renewal, mailboxes, implementation and operating help. Compare the same business workflow and billing currency on both sides.

Leaving Wix means replacing its hosted website

Wix’s external-hosting documentation says the standard builder website depends on Wix servers. Registering the domain elsewhere does not make the working site portable to another host.

Some business records can be preserved separately. For example, its product export guide supports physical-product CSV exports, with digital-product exports excluded and a 5,000-row limit per file. Budget preservation and destination mapping for the relevant records; do not equate a CSV with a complete store transfer.

Webflow exports code, with important omissions

Webflow’s code-export guide describes HTML, CSS, JavaScript and assets. Hosted CMS and ecommerce functionality, form processing, search and password protection do not travel as a functioning application in that export.

HRL’s planning implication is to name the replacement for each hosted function. A developer delivering an exported design should also identify who will process enquiries, maintain records and protect private material. Our export versus backup guide provides that inventory.

Compare the editing job and the exit job

Give each builder the same content brief: add a new item, update its navigation and reuse the content where needed. Separately list what must work after leaving the platform, including forms and structured content. Record any rebuilding cost instead of treating an export entitlement as a completed migration. This proposed test keeps the present editor’s needs and a future developer’s needs visible.

Approve the workflow, then the platform

For the service-business brief, compare owner editing, booking exceptions, notifications and the full service bill. For the structured-content brief, compare content relationships, publishing roles and what the team must maintain. In both cases, require a clear handover and an accepted exit plan.

Use the website handover checklist to record accounts and renewals. If independent application hosting is a requirement, read Webflow versus WordPress. For another hosted-builder shortlist, compare Webflow and Squarespace.
