Shopify Domain and Email Costs: Renewal, Mailboxes and Ownership
A store plan, a domain name and a business inbox solve different problems. Keep three budget lines and three ownership checks, even when some settings live in the same admin screen.
Documentation checked October 5, 2026. Provider facts are linked to official sources; recommendations and worked examples are HRL analysis. No hands-on store, migration or performance test is claimed.

Does a Shopify plan include a free custom domain?
A store has a myshopify.com address, and Shopify permits a separately purchased custom domain or a domain connected from another provider. Its domain documentation explains those routes. Do not treat the ability to connect a custom domain as a free registration.
Shopify’s domain-purchase guide says its domains are registered for one year, priced by extension and renewed separately from the store plan. Domain purchases are non-refundable. It also says a Shopify-managed domain should be transferred before deactivating the store if you want to keep using it elsewhere.
We do not publish a universal domain price here: it depends on the chosen name, extension and quote. Before purchase, record the registration amount, next renewal amount, applicable taxes and whether privacy is available for that extension.
Choose the account arrangement deliberately
| Service | Ownership check | Cost check |
|---|---|---|
| Store plan | Business controls owner access and recovery. | Billing term and next subscription bill. |
| Domain registration | Business controls registrant and registrar account. | Registration and standard renewal quote. |
| DNS | Named owner can update website and mail records. | Any separate DNS-service charge. |
| Mailboxes | Business controls users, recovery and records. | Users, storage, term and renewal price. |
These are HRL handover recommendations. If a developer creates the accounts, agree how the business receives control and how the developer’s access can be removed later. Our handover checklist helps turn that agreement into verifiable deliverables.
Email forwarding is different from a business mailbox
Shopify’s forwarding documentation describes routing a Shopify-managed-domain address into an existing third-party inbox. Replies from that inbox display its address; sending as the custom-domain address requires third-party email hosting. Forwarding for a third-party-managed domain is handled outside Shopify’s forwarding setup.
For a solo owner, receiving enquiries in an existing inbox may meet a narrow requirement. A team may need separate users, shared access, sent-message records and a consistent reply identity. Write those requirements down before comparing email services.
Shopify does not provide email hosting. A connected third-party mailbox service has its own billing and configuration. Marketing emails and store notifications are separate workflows; neither demonstrates that you have a full staff mailbox.
Budget renewals separately
The Shopify-managed domain renewal guide states that domain renewal charges are separate from plan fees and scheduled before registration expiry. Review the renewal date shown for your domain. Renewal controls and rules can vary by extension.
Keep a calendar with the domain bill, store bill and mailbox bill. Use verified quotes rather than copying the store’s advertised monthly equivalent into all three lines. The Shopify pricing guide supplies the separate plan and payment-fee checks.
Test inbound mail, replies and notifications independently
- Send an enquiry from an unrelated external account to each public business address.
- Reply and confirm the sender identity is the one the business intends customers to see.
- Test the store’s documented order-notification workflow separately.
- Check that the right staff member can access the records and recover the account.
- Record the service owner and next invoice date alongside each successful check.
Follow the mailbox provider’s current DNS instructions. Preserve existing working mail records when changing the website destination; do not replace an entire DNS configuration based on a web-hosting setup screenshot. Our website-move email checklist covers this broader risk.
Test the reply journey as well as forwarding
Send a controlled message to the business address, locate it at the intended inbox, then reply using the intended business identity. Record which service handled each direction. A forwarded message arriving successfully does not establish that replies use the desired sender or that website notifications use the same route. Keep mailbox billing and incoming-mail routing in the service record.
What happens when you leave Shopify?
Shopify’s deactivation guide says canceling the store does not cancel domain renewals and that externally billed apps need separate review. Decide which services to retain, transfer or cancel; do not let a domain expire when the intention is to keep using it.
Preserve the domain account, DNS records and mailbox service through the website cutover. Use domain transfer vs. DNS change to separate moving registration from changing the site destination.
If the destination is a self-hosted store, continue with our Shopify-to-WooCommerce checklist. If you are still deciding, compare Shopify vs. WooCommerce or browse the website-builder hub.
