Shopify vs. WooCommerce: Real Cost, Maintenance and Ownership

Our take: shortlist Shopify when you want the store platform and its hosting in one service. Shortlist WooCommerce when choosing your host and maintaining a customizable WordPress installation are priorities—and you have a named person to operate it. Neither choice proves a lower total bill.

Illustrated guide: Shopify vs. WooCommerce: Real Cost, Maintenance and Ownership

Compare the operating arrangement first

Shopify includes hosting in its store subscription. WooCommerce is a free, open-source WordPress ecommerce plugin whose hosting is selected separately. These documented models come from Shopify pricing and WooCommerce pricing.

A decision framework, rather than a universal winner

The last two rows are HRL planning recommendations. More control can be useful, but someone must use it. Ask who investigates a failed checkout at 4 p.m. on a Friday, and what their support agreement actually covers.

Free software is different from a free store

Compare complete bills for the same workload. A Shopify subscription and a WooCommerce hosting promotion have different scope. Include domain renewal, business email, paid apps or extensions, setup, ongoing support, backups, payment processing and any applicable transaction charge.

Use the Shopify pricing guide for verified US rates and subscription scenarios. Use the WooCommerce cost worksheet to collect your host and extension quotes. Keep setup costs separate from recurring costs so a one-time build does not distort the renewal comparison.

Compare payment fees using your payment mix

Shopify documents plan-dependent third-party transaction charges and payment-method exemptions in its billing overview. WooCommerce says its core platform adds no gateway penalty; your processor and any paid integration still need their own quote.

A fair comparison uses the same sales volume, number of orders, countries, currencies and payment methods. Check refund and dispute treatment too. A processor headline rate cannot describe every transaction, and a lower percentage does not automatically justify a higher plan.

Who handles updates, staging and recovery?

WooCommerce’s update documentation calls for current backups, staging tests and checks of store workflows. Ask a proposed host or developer who performs those steps and whether extension-related problems fall inside their support scope.

For Shopify, agree who owns app configuration, catalogue changes, checkout settings and external integrations. A hosted service does not remove the need to test your particular selling workflow. The comparison is which responsibilities remain with your team and how they are covered.

Our WooCommerce order-recovery guide explains why restoring a store needs attention to newer orders. Use the staging guide to make release checks concrete.

Ownership and portability need their own acceptance test

Ask for an inventory of content, products, customers, order history, subscriptions, media and third-party services. Then identify the supported export and import for each item. Avoid assuming that a theme download or product CSV reproduces a working checkout elsewhere.

For an existing Shopify store, our Shopify-to-WooCommerce migration checklist focuses on destination acceptance. Our Shopify domain and email guide separates those accounts from the store plan.

Test who owns a broken order journey

Give each shortlist the same hypothetical incident: payment appears at the gateway but the expected store record or notification is missing. Identify who can inspect each system, reconcile the transaction and implement the repair. Use the order-test checklist for the evidence trail. Choose the operating arrangement your business can maintain, including work left outside platform or hosting support.

Which should a small business shortlist?

  • Choose the Shopify route to investigate when a hosted platform meets the selling requirements and your team prefers one platform subscription. Validate the required apps and total bill.
  • Choose the WooCommerce route to investigate when WordPress integration, host choice or custom workflows justify operating a separate installation. Obtain a maintenance and recovery proposal.
  • Keep both in the shortlist when the main uncertainty is cost. Request comparable three-year quotes for the same store and name the work excluded from each.

These are conditional recommendations, not measured superiority claims. Test your checkout, shipping, customer-account and refund workflows before a long commitment. Continue with our ecommerce hosting shortlist or builder research hub.
