WooCommerce Pricing: Hosting, Extensions and the Full Store Budget
WooCommerce’s core plugin is free. The useful purchase question is what it costs to run your store, including the host, required extensions and the person keeping checkout working.
Documentation checked October 5, 2026. Provider facts are linked to official sources; recommendations and worked examples are HRL analysis. No hands-on store, migration or performance test is claimed.

What WooCommerce charges—and what belongs elsewhere
WooCommerce’s pricing page describes a free core platform without a monthly core subscription or revenue share. Hosting and paid extensions are separate budget choices. That does not make payment processing, development or every third-party integration free.
| Budget line | What to record | Renewal check |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | Term, upfront invoice, limits and support scope. | Standard renewal amount and renewal term. |
| Extensions | Required feature, licence scope and quoted charge. | Renewal price, billing date and update entitlement. |
| Theme / build | Licence and implementation scope. | Recurring licence or support obligations. |
| Payments | Method, country, currency and fee schedule. | Changes in rate or transaction mix. |
| Email / domain | Mailbox count, storage and registration quote. | Separate service renewal dates. |
| Maintenance / recovery | Named owner and deliverables. | Ongoing support fee and recovery scope. |
Price the smallest combination that completes your store’s acceptance checklist. If subscriptions, bookings or specialist shipping require an extension, include that product’s actual quote. Do not budget for a large plugin bundle simply because it exists.
Read the hosting commitment, not just the monthly equivalent
Record the full invoice required today, what period it covers and the next standard renewal bill. Verify that the intended server environment meets the WooCommerce requirements for the version you will run. Minimum compatibility is a starting check, not proof of capacity for your catalogue or busy checkout.
Ask the host how staging, off-site recovery, scheduled tasks and support for payment or extension issues work. Use the ecommerce hosting shortlist to find candidates, then validate the chosen plan. Our renewal-cost guide helps separate a promotional term from ongoing cost.
Payment processing still belongs in the budget
WooPayments’ official fee schedule varies by business/customer country, payment method and currency. It also documents additional fee categories and states that transaction fees are not returned on customer refunds. Other processors have their own terms.
Build a payment estimate from the expected payment mix and order count, then reconcile it against actual statements after launch. Keep processor charges separate from hosting; upgrading a server does not change a processor’s pricing by itself.
An illustrative three-year and five-year budget
The following inputs are invented budgeting assumptions, not verified provider quotes or a recommended plan. They demonstrate the calculation only. Assume hosting at $25/month, maintenance at $50/month, extensions at $120/year, email at $60/year and a one-time build at $500.
| Period | Calculation | Fixed cost |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | $500 + $300 + $600 + $120 + $60 | $1,580 |
| 3 years | $500 + 3 × $1,080 | $3,740 |
| 5 years | $500 + 5 × $1,080 | $5,900 |
The $1,080 annual recurring assumption excludes domain registration, taxes, payment charges, shipping, stock, migration and future price changes. Replace every input with your quotes before using it to decide. This is a partial fixed-cost scenario, not a complete total-cost forecast.
Include the work of keeping the store usable
WooCommerce’s update guide describes backups, staging and post-update workflow checks. Include that work in a support agreement or reserve your own time. A plan described as managed may still have boundaries around custom code and extensions.
Define how newer orders are handled if recovery uses an older database. Read our order-recovery guide and staging checklist before treating backups as a completed operating plan.

Put maintenance time in the WooCommerce budget
Keep software subscriptions and human work on different rows. A hypothetical two hours of monthly maintenance at $60 per hour adds $1,440 per year; this is an illustrative input, not a market-rate claim. Decide which updates, tests and incidents that allowance covers. If nobody owns the uncovered work, a low hosting invoice still leaves an incomplete operating budget.
Compare WooCommerce with a hosted store fairly
Put the same selling requirements in both quotes: product types, customer accounts, payment methods, recurring purchases, shipping and the support arrangement. Compare cash paid over the chosen horizon and ongoing obligations, rather than declaring the free core plugin the winner.
Our Shopify vs. WooCommerce comparison explains the operating tradeoffs; Shopify pricing supplies its separate subscription and fee checks. Existing Shopify owners can use the migration checklist to budget the move.
