Wix vs. Shopify: Store Workflows, Real Costs and Leaving
Shortlist Wix when the project combines a business website with selling, bookings or service enquiries. Shortlist Shopify when the store’s checkout, stock and fulfilment workflow drives the project. These are HRL starting points, not a claim that either platform will handle every requirement without a paid upgrade or app.
A small catalogue does not automatically make one platform the right choice. A ten-product business with subscriptions, international shipping and accounting integration can be harder to operate than a larger, straightforward domestic catalogue. Choose by the workflow you can demonstrate and the full cost of keeping it running.

Wix or Shopify: what should you test first?
| Decision | Wix evaluation | Shopify evaluation |
|---|---|---|
| Website and services | Test content editing, enquiry routing and any booking workflow together. | Test whether the selected theme and tools support the content and service pages you need. |
| Store operations | Demonstrate product options, delivery rules and order handling in the selected tier. | Demonstrate checkout, stock changes, fulfilment and returns, including any required apps. |
| Team access | Confirm account ownership, collaborator limits and the permissions each person needs. | Confirm staff access and permissions on the exact plan; do not assume entry tiers include every role. |
| Future move | Inventory records and plan an external rebuild. | Inventory records, app replacements and a destination checkout; a theme download is not a portable store. |
Wix’s plan selector lists accepting payments, basic ecommerce, and scheduling and services on Core. Shopify’s plan comparison lists a full online store, inventory management and selling channels. These documented features establish what to investigate; they do not establish your integration’s compatibility or its final price.
Compare the full invoice, not just the monthly label
Use our Wix pricing and renewal guide and Shopify pricing guide for the dated subscription references. Keep annual upfront payments separate from their monthly equivalents. Public prices can be localized; confirm billing country, currency, taxes, term and offer conditions in your own quote.
Put website subscription, domain renewal, mailboxes, apps, implementation and recurring operating help on separate lines. A first-year domain offer cannot establish the domain’s later renewal price. Record the next payment date and amount for each service, rather than assuming they all renew when the website does.
Then add the selling costs. Wix publishes payment-method and country-specific charges in its Wix Payments fee schedule. Shopify separates processing and applicable third-party transaction fees in its pricing documentation. Match each schedule to the same sales mix: payment method, business country, customer location, currency and refund assumptions.
HRL’s budgeting rule is to calculate subscription cash payments plus required services plus sales-dependent charges. Show one-time setup separately. If an upgrade removes an applicable fee or replaces a required app, compare that saving with the extra subscription commitment. A percentage reduction alone does not prove the upgrade is worthwhile.
Leaving Wix is a rebuild decision
Wix documents that its standard builder site must operate on Wix infrastructure. Owning the content or registering the domain elsewhere does not turn it into a working site you can upload to another host. Source: Wix’s external-hosting explanation.
Its product-export documentation allows physical-product CSV exports, with a limit of 5,000 rows per file, and says digital-product exports are not currently supported. Plan separate preservation for downloadable files and their delivery rules. Check the destination’s required fields before paying for a migration service.
Leaving Shopify also needs destination acceptance
Shopify documents record exports and theme downloads, but its duplication guide still requires app installation and manual configuration. Those files do not establish that an external platform can reproduce your store. Read the official backup and duplication boundaries, then define what the destination must do.
For either platform, inventory products, media, customers, orders, discounts, subscriptions, URLs and apps. Verify domain and mailbox ownership separately. Our export versus backup guide explains the inventory; the Shopify domain and email guide separates those account costs.
Use the same cart as your comparison brief
Create a representative product and variant list, delivery destination, discount and refund scenario for both shortlisted platforms. Ask the future operator to explain which built-in features and paid integrations each case needs. Compare the complete quote only after that inventory is clear. This proposed rehearsal does not establish a test result or a universal winner for Wix or Shopify.
A practical selection checklist
- Build a representative product or service and complete its customer journey.
- Test the required payment, delivery, notification and refund workflow before committing to a long term.
- List every paid dependency and identify the person responsible for orders and renewals.
- Keep a sample export and document the records or functions it leaves behind.
- Make the business the account owner and record handover access using our website handover checklist.
If control over hosting and the application stack is a purchase requirement, extend the shortlist with Shopify versus WooCommerce. Include the maintenance arrangement in that comparison. Also compare Squarespace versus Shopify for a content-and-commerce project.
