What you get
Contabo pricing at a glance
Review scope: This is an editorial assessment of provider documentation checked October 1, 2026. HRL has not tested this provider in a customer account or measured its speed, uptime, support response time, or restore reliability. We have not assigned a numerical performance score.
Our verdict: evaluate it as infrastructure, with an operator attached
Contabo deserves a review because buying a virtual server is a different decision from buying a ready-to-use WordPress hosting account. It is a candidate for readers who need control over a server environment and have someone responsible for operating it. Our recommendation would be much more cautious for a first-time business owner expecting the host to maintain every application.
Management responsibility is the deciding feature
Contabo’s Cloud VPS documentation identifies the service as unmanaged. Its security guidance also makes clear that server access brings customer responsibilities. A usable website still needs the operating system, application stack, credentials, patching, monitoring and recovery procedures to be managed.
Before purchasing, name the person who will respond when a database fills the disk or a software update breaks the site. If the answer is a paid administrator, include that cost alongside the server price. If the answer is you, include the time and skills required. That is the useful comparison with a managed provider.
Pricing: use a complete configuration
We could not reliably retrieve the live regional pricing table during this review, so we have not published a verified starting or renewal price. This is an evidence limitation, not a judgment about the product. Request or save a configuration showing the server family, region, billing term, currency, tax and any applicable setup charges.
Contabo’s upgrade guidance says some region changes carry additional location charges. Its documentation lists automatic backups as a paid add-on for Cloud VPS. Add software licenses, backup services and other selected extras to the bill before comparing it with shared or managed WordPress hosting.
Recovery matters as much as server specifications
The current VPS Auto Backup documentation describes daily off-server backups with up to ten backups retained for a maximum of ten days. The add-on is available for Core VPS and Performance VPS, but not Storage VPS. Check the exact eligible product and recovery process at purchase. An infrastructure snapshot and an application-aware database backup solve related but different problems; orders written since the last recovery point still need consideration.
Our practical checklist is to test a restore, keep an appropriate off-server copy, document access credentials securely and set alerts for storage and application failure. Ask what support covers before assuming that an application problem will be investigated as part of the hosting service.
What we like and what gives us pause
- Useful fit: technical projects needing server control and an explicit operating plan.
- Important caution: advertised resources alone do not establish application speed or consistent capacity under load.
- Purchase condition: the total regional price and included services must be verified.
- Evidence gap: HRL has not tested contention, network latency, incident support or recovery speed.
Compare the service category first
Read our managed versus unmanaged VPS guide before comparing Contabo with Cloudways or Liquid Web. Those comparisons should establish the division of responsibility rather than assume equal management at equal prices. Our backup guide covers the questions to ask about recovery.
Contabo is worth covering as an infrastructure option. It should not be promoted as a universal beginner alternative simply because a headline server price looks attractive.
