Which host should you choose?

Choose Kinsta if…

  • You want an eligible first month to test the platform
  • You prefer Kinsta's managed migration and monitoring tools
  • You will check visit or bandwidth allowances against actual traffic

Choose WP Engine if…

  • Transferable development sites fit your agency workflow
  • You want WP Engine's Genesis and staging ecosystem
  • The Essential plan's capacity and add-ons fit your sites

First invoice: compare billing cycles, not rounded monthly figures

Kinsta lists its eligible single-site plan at $35 month to month or $350 billed annually after an eligible free first month. Its display rounds the annual option to about $30 per month. WP Engine’s one-site Essential configurator showed $35 month to month or $28 per month equivalent on a $336 annual bill on September 25, 2026, but its first-year offers apply only to qualifying new Essential purchases and do not carry into renewal. Those monthly figures should not be read as identical checkout charges. Select the same billing interval, site count, and region before comparing the carts.

For Kinsta, ask when the eligible free month ends, when the first paid invoice posts, and whether overages accrue during the trial. For WP Engine, save the first-year discount and the next renewal quote shown in your order. A free month and a first-year discount solve different cash-flow problems; neither tells you the full cost for year two. Our renewal cost calculator can model ordinary prepaid and renewal terms, but it does not yet model Kinsta’s free month. Add that trial period separately when you compare totals.

Capacity: compare the workload, not just the plan names

Kinsta’s Single 35k visit-based plan includes one WordPress install, a 35,000-visit allowance, and 10 GB of storage. Kinsta also offers bandwidth-based plans; its newer Launch family uses server bandwidth rather than visits for pricing. WP Engine’s one-site Essential configuration lists 25,000 estimated visits and 10 GB storage, with a 75 GB bandwidth allowance shown on its plan comparison. Both hosts offer higher capacities. The right choice depends on a real site’s recent monthly traffic, traffic spikes, image weight, and whether you need one site or several.

Neither company’s visit count is guaranteed to match Google Analytics. Check each host’s own usage dashboard, particularly if bots, a CDN, or cached pages affect what reaches the hosting platform. A marketing campaign that triples traffic is a good problem to have; an unexpected resource invoice is less fun.

What happens when you exceed the allowance?

For Kinsta’s visit-based plans, its documentation lists $0.50 per additional 1,000 visits. On a bandwidth-based plan, the documented server-bandwidth overage is $0.50 per GB; storage and CDN use have separate rules. WP Engine says qualifying Startup, Professional, Growth, Scale, and named Agency plans incur $2 per 1,000 additional billable visits, charged monthly even if the hosting plan is paid annually. For a purely illustrative 10,000 visits above the relevant visit allowance, that is $5 on Kinsta’s visit-based model versus $20 on an applicable WP Engine plan. The allowances, counting rules, and base plans differ, so this is overage math, not a recommendation to buy based on overage rate alone.

Migrations, backups, and the workflow around the site

Kinsta lists expert-assisted WordPress migrations, one-click staging, monitoring tools, and plan-dependent backup retention. WP Engine’s Essential plan includes a free automated migration plugin, production/staging/development environments, backups, SSL, and a CDN; its feature comparison labels some advanced plugin-update and monitoring products as optional add-ons. WP Engine also supports transferable development sites, which can be especially useful if an agency builds first and hands a site to a client. Verify what is included on the chosen tier, because the premium branding does not pay for every add-on.

Our pick, and when we would choose the other host

Kinsta narrowly leads our current overall score and is our best fit for a business-critical WordPress site that wants to test an eligible plan for a month, use managed migration help, and monitor resource use closely. WP Engine remains a sensible choice when an agency already depends on its transferable-site workflow, Genesis ecosystem, or development process. Compare the operational work each platform removes for your team, then price the specific add-ons and traffic tier you need.
